January, 24 2025 mi2-factory secures Series A financing and IPCEI ME/KT funding for novel EFIITRON semiconductor process technology

mi2-factory GmbH, a high-tech start-up in the field of semiconductor equipment, today announces the closing of a EUR 15 million Series A financing and the commitment of a government grant from the ICPEI ME/CT program of up to EUR 23 million.

The Belgian company Ion Beam Applications S.A. (IBA), world market leader in particle accelerator technology, and the public investment company Wallonie Entreprendre International (WE International), together with beteiligungsmanagement thüringen gmbh (bm|t) and a family office, are investing a total of EUR 15 million in mi2-factory GmbH. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the Free State of Thuringia are also providing a total of EUR 23 million in public funds from the IPCEI ME/CT program.

The investment and funding will make it possible to bring the patented, proprietary EFIITRON technology, which has been tested on a laboratory scale, to industrial maturity and to demonstrate its first industrial use. Chip manufacturers will use EFIITRON in the future to reduce chip costs, increase reliability and realize new component and wafer architectures. Chip manufacturers will benefit from the unprecedented precision and flexibility of deep doping in SiC. This enables a cost reduction of up to 30% for silicon carbide (SiC) chips. EFIITRON is targeting the strategic market of silicon carbide power electronics for e‑mobility, renewable energies, AI data centers, traction and industrial drives. Renowned studies expect a market volume of > $6 billion in 2027 with a CAGR of 30–40%. mi2-factory has set itself the goal of processing more than 30% of all SiC wafers with EFIITRON systems in the long term.

The strategic investor IBA contributes its extensive experience and leading know-how in the field of compact particle accelerator technologies to the development and design of EFIITRON and thus plays a decisive role in the industrialization of EFIITRON technology as a European high-tech process technology.
